Pay-per-click (PPC)
Pay per click (PPC) advertising allows you to pay to have your advert listed on the major search engines: the most prominent of these is Google's Adwords. They are the sponsored links you see when you perform a search in a search engine. They usually appear at the top and right side of the search engine results page (SERP) and are identified as Paid Listings, Sponsored Links, Sponsored Listings, or Featured Listings. Pay per click (PPC) search engines call for you to pay to have your advertisement listed by allowing you to bid on keywords that are related to your business. You can always get on to page one for your chosen keywords if you have a large enough budget. If your budget is smaller then you can run adverts in smaller regions, or for only parts of the day (or week), or spread the Adwords out evenly over time.
When search engine visitors click on your PPC advert, they are sent to a page on your web site. As an advertiser, you are only charged when a visitor clicks on your advert and visits your web site. Typically minimum bids start at a few pence (or cents) and you can set a daily maximum budget to keep on top of your costs. However this can catch small businesses unawares: a pound (or euro) a day is still several hundred per year.

The positioning, or rank, of PPC campaign adverts are based on an open (visible) bidding system. In this system, advertisers bid to have their advertisement listed. The bid amount is paid by the advertiser when a visitor clicks on the advert; hence, this is also known as "cost per click" (CPC). These terms are used interchangeably to describe Pay Per Click web advertising even though PPC refers to a payment method and CPC refers to the cost involved in each payment. Usually whoever bids highest gets the highest listed advert position, but some search engines, notably Google, have made this a little harder by using a secret formula that uses other criteria as well as bid price. In essence, if you produce a lot of money for Google then it will give you a higher position for less cost. Google will give a higher position to an advert that only pays it 10p per click but has thousands of clicks, rather than an advert that pays it £10 per click but is never clicked. You can see their point. Another big factor on the cost per click is the 'keyword qualiity' of the page that an advert points to - a SEO-optimised page will have a lower CPC (another reason to use SEO). It is important to use a Google Adwords Professional that is also an experienced SEO expert - you will find many are not. On Page One Google Adwords Professionals are always SEO experts.
