Accessibility and accessible websites

Google cares about accessibility: if you design your website content to be accessible then Google will be able to see it too: you can't expect your optimised website to be on page one unless Google can see it.

We work closely with designers that specialise in accessible web design. If you tell us your requirements and budget then we will recommend a web designer to suit you.

Why build an accessible website?

Apart from the moral obligation and good business sense, there's also a legal responsibility, under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), to make your website accessible to disabled visitors. For example, if you press the control and + or - keys you can easily change text size, thus making your website accessible to people with visual impairments. Accessible websites rank high in the search engines and visitors will find it easier to find your business and contact you too.

W3C, WAI, AA, AAA, WCAG Accessibility

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are part of a series of Web accessibility guidelines published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI). They consist of a set of guidelines on making content accessible, primarily for disabled users and non-human limited devices such as mobile phones.

There are two versions of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). WCAG 1 was published in 1999 and contains 14 main guidelines with a further 51 lesser ones. WCAG 2 (still a draft) reorganises, combines, and extends many of the WCAG 1 guidelines.

Each guideline has a one or more ‘checkpoints’ which developers should consider to ensure the accessibility of a Web page. Each checkpoint has a priority level based on its impact on Web accessibility.

The WCAG provides a number of examples and techniques to help Web developers to implement the guidelines.

WCAG Conformance

The WCAG conformance of a website is dependent on it satisfying the WCAG priority checkpoints. Compliance with the recommendations of each level ensures greater accessibility of Web pages.

The WCAG guidelines have three levels of conformance.

  1. Conformance Level "A": all Priority 1 checkpoints are satisfied. This is known as 'WCAG A' compliant.
  2. Conformance Level "Double-A": all Priority 1 and 2 checkpoints are satisfied. This is known as 'WCAG AA' compliant.
  3. Conformance Level "Triple-A": all Priority 1, 2, and 3 checkpoints are satisfied. This is known as 'WCAG AAA' compliant.
